The World of YouTube Beauty Videos
Are you a beauty junkie? (Um, is the sky blue?) There’s an entire world on YouTube of glamour goddesses who create daily hair and makeup tutorial videos for people like us…and watching them all in rapid succession has quickly become one of my biggest guilty pleasures. The sheer volume of insider tricks out there boggles the mind! Gurus like Michelle Phan, All That Glitters 21, Makeup Geek TV, Juicy Star 07, Lollipop 26 and Panacea 81 (otherwise known as newbie cosmetics sensation Lauren Luke) video from their bedrooms, offering a refreshing real-gal spin on how to use products to look gorgeous. (I have my own YouTube channel, at Jolie NYC, but my hand-held camera and “Eh, who really cares?” background are of the indie variety, while the above videos resemble Oscar-caliber productions.)
I’ve included a Michelle Phan video above–hers are my personal favorite–on how to salvage the last bits of your lipgloss from the tube. Enjoy…and I dare you not to become addicted yourself!

3 Classic Nail Polishes
When it comes to nail polish, it’s nice to have all the colors of the rainbow on hand, so your manicure can fit your mood and the occasion. Sometimes you might want to mix it up with trendy green, navy or yellow…but othertimes, nothing but the classics will do! Here are Marta’s picks for 3 classic nail polish shades.

Essie Mademoiselle: An every day soft pink, great for making nails appear polished and demure. It’s just a bit more exaggerated than your natural color, and oh-so-pretty. Mademoiselle is the polish to reach for when you want only a hint of color on nails. (more…)
Beauty…Hollywood Style: Being sick in Los Angeles
These last few days mark my very first time being sick in LA! Pretty exciting stuff, no? It’s been surprisingly difficult staying in and not enjoying the beautiful, sunny weather, considering the fact that I feel absolutely awful. From what all of my LA friends have been telling me, something has been “going around” and apparently I’m one of the lucky people to catch it. What’s also completely not cool about this sickness is that I have NO IDEA what is wrong with me. My symptoms? A persistent dry cough, achiness and loss of voice. Maybe I’m dying! (Hmm…and also coming down with a case of hypochondria. Perhaps Hollywood really is rubbing off on me.)
Anyway, while I stay inside my Hollywood apartment, I’ve been entertaining myself by blogging, watching terrible reality TV shows that I’ve never watched before (examples: Tough Love and Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew) and getting plenty of sleep. I actually slept for 13 hours last night, which is something I haven’t done since my senior year of college when I only had classes after 1PM.
Why am I ok with this? I’ve been really making an effort to let my body heal itself, which, in the past is something that I would’ve had a difficult time doing while running around Manhattan in the rain and going from event to event. Not this time, ladies! (more…)
Beauty Lessons from Lady Gaga
I am indescribably obsessed with Lady Gaga‘s new video Bad Romance. Suddenly, it’s all come home for me: the avant-garde getups, the over-the-top makeup, the absurd hair…the eureka! light has flashed on! Like Madonna before her, LG is proof positive that you can work any beauty look–no matter how ridiculous–if you simply own it. (And, yeah…Gaga’s beauty choices are definitely ridiculous. No getting around that.) She’s not traditionally pretty, but there’s something really beautiful about the way she blazes her own trail, and worries not what anybody else thinks.
So, hot pink eyeshadow and cotton-candy colored locks probably won’t work for you, but why not channel Gaga’s insouciance next time you feel like sporting something that normally would give you pause? (Think pastel nails, an asymmetrical bob, or look-at-me! lipstick.) Just as we now wear white after Labor Day and pair red wine with fish, there’s no reason you can’t go simultaneously bold on the eyes and the lips…or wear dark nails to your office…or apply false eyelashes for a fluttery boost on the weekend.
It’s just beauty! Have fun with it!
